One Big Farmers' Market!
Another 5,000 attend Sunday event as move to the Large Outdoor Covered Market proves successful
THE second Preston Farmers’ Market, held on Sunday 20th May, on the Large Outdoor Covered Market in Preston proved that there was more than one big draw for the public in the city, attracting over 5000 people to sample tasty delights from 55 local producers.
With a 25% increase in the number of stalls from the April event, customers were able to sample ostrich meat, fruit, vegetables, seafood, chillis, regional cheeses and Fairtrade products.
Event organisers, Preston Chamber of Trade, said punters could expect more of the same at the next event on Sunday 24th June, whilst an announcement on the future dates for 2007 is expected very soon.
Joint Chief Executive of Preston Chamber of Trade, Richard Sullivan, said: “We were very pleased with the turnout on Sunday, especially in light of the competing attractions, not only in the city but the region, which is testament to the high quality range of producers on display and also the people of Preston, who were keen to be part of the event again.
“Our initial estimates suggest another 5,000 people attended which was terrific and really helped create a city centre buzz. Going forward, we’re certainly looking to make this a monthly fixture and will be announcing the rest of the 2007 dates as soon as possible.
“It was especially pleasing to see such a varied crowd in attendance, with all age ranges and ethnic minorities turning up to sample the great atmosphere and produce.”
Lune Valley Vintage Jazz Band continued the musical theme consuming the city this weekend by delivering a memorable two hour stint plus Turbary Birds of Prey and Owl display attracted non-stop traffic all day with its range of Barn Owls, Kestrels and Eagles. The sphercular arts society at UCLan impressed crowds with their juggling skills and a face painter was on hand to delight the children.
The next market takes place on Sunday 24th June on the Large Outdoor Covered Market. For further details, please call 01772 277244.
